The Silent Signs: Recognizing When Your HVAC Needs Attention

HVAC systems typically work in the background. People only notice there is a problem with them when they don’t work as expected. The system is designed to create a comfortable indoor environment regardless of the time of the year. However, every time it is used, it is exposed to wear and tear, and minor problems can quickly escalate if not addressed promptly. Furthermore, they can affect the efficiency and longevity of this system. What are some silent signs that suggest the HVAC system needs attention?

Strange Noises

Strange noises coming from the HVAC system are a cause for concern. This system is not designed to make scraping, grinding, or squealing noises. If these noises are heard, there is likely a mechanical issue that must be addressed. Homeowners must understand that addressing issues with your HVAC quickly will keep repair costs down. Loose or worn-out parts in the system can lead to damage to additional components. Call for a repair immediately to prevent further damage.

Fluctuating Temperatures

HVAC systems should keep the home at a consistent temperature throughout. If temperatures fluctuate between rooms or the system cannot maintain the temperature set on the thermostat, there is likely a problem within the system, and it could be as simple as a malfunctioning thermostat, or the unit could not be appropriately sized for the property.  Addressing these problems quickly will prevent excessive wear and tear on the unit.

Skyrocketing Energy Bills

When a homeowner notices that their energy bills are spiking suddenly and they have not used the system more than usual, they need to identify the issue.  Before calling a technician, the homeowner should first check the air filters to confirm they are not dirty, clogged, or blocked.  If that is not the issue, it is time to call for help; allowing the system to continue running could lead to expensive repairs and skyrocketing energy bills.

Poor Indoor Air Quality

If family members get sick regularly and nobody can figure out why, the HVAC system may be the issue. It plays a role in indoor air quality. Furthermore, if there’s noticeable dust in the home or the air feels stale, the HVAC system may be to blame. Call a technician and have them inspect the system to determine the issue and how best to fix it. Poor indoor air quality can negatively impact the health of those who live in the home, so this is one issue that should be addressed right away.

Frequent Cycling

The HVAC system should not turn on and off frequently. Doing so put excessive strain on the unit. This problem is referred to as short cycling and can lead to higher energy bills and a shortened lifespan for the unit. A refrigerant leak is often the culprit, although the problem might lie in an oversized unit. When the system functions erratically, the home won’t remain at a comfortable temperature.

Regular HVAC maintenance helps prevent these issues. The system should be inspected by a licensed technician at least twice a year to ensure it runs smoothly year-round. Between these visits, the homeowners ought to replace the air filters every one to three months. They must also keep dirt and debris away from the outdoor unit because any items within two feet of the outdoor unit can impede airflow and reduce efficiency.  Speak with the technician during regular maintenance to learn other ways to keep the system running its best at all times. Technicians are happy to share this information with their customers.
